In publicizing the debut novel The House Between Tides by
Sarah Maine, the publisher says “Kate Morton meets Daphne du Maurier” and that
is a fair summary. The House Between Tides is
filled with suspense, long-held misunderstandings, and even some romance, but
there is an over-arching feeling of the power of nature and isolation.
Set primarily on a remote
island of Scotland’s coast, The House Between Tides shifts
between contemporary times and 1910/11. In the current day, Hettie has arrived
to possibly turn her life around by using the newly inherited house as a hotel,
but her plans are thwarted due to its poor state and the discovery of a body. That body may have ties to the much earlier
period when artist Theo Blake and his wife, Beatrice, summered on the
island. In both story lines, forceful
men are attempting to control younger women who each needs to find her own
inner strength and resolve.
Increasing tension, family
secrets and surprising twists are all waiting for readers in this appealing blend
of historical fiction and mystery.
