Put Kindle on Your Wishlist for the Holidays

The new e-book reader, Kindle is all the rage. Steven Levy reviewed the new product from Amazon and, after reading three books on it,found that he "didn't feel I was missing anything that I would have gotten in a "real" book. In a recent Newsweek article, Levy asks the question: Can It Kindle the Imagination? The answer seems to be yes!

However, he's not as happy with it for newspaper reading because you have to read lists of articles with insufficient descriptions. Yet it is cheaper to read the New York Times for $13.99 a month, compared with approximately $50 for home delivery.
The very best thing about Kindle is the ability to click and buy a book from Amazon and have it in about one minute.

I don't think I'll pony up for one of these until the price comes down, but it seems like a fabulous gift for the person "who has everything".

Gift of The Book

I read an article about the need for a stamp to celebrate a specific library or group of libraries since the two stamps that were created long ago were for the Library of Congress and all the libraries of the nation.

"Legacies of Mankind" is on the Library of Congress stamp, which is based on Spectator, written by Joseph Addison. This line is based on the the following (excellent) quotation:

"Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those yet unborn."

The Crucible

As a partner in the fall 2007, "One Book, One Chicago," Steppenwolf Theatre Company is currently staging a production of The Crucible. (now through November 11, 2007) I saw the production yesterday and it was really worthwhile. Don't miss it. A series of free public programs featuring Steppenwolf actors will also take place at selected Chicago Public Library branches.

On Monday, October 29, 2007 at 6:30 p.m., New York Times columnist Frank Rich will join John Callaway, former host of Chicago Tonight, to discuss what the American people can learn from the Salem witch hunts and McCarthyism at the Harold Washington Library.

Hello readers of books. . . welcome to the New Trier Library's book blog. We want to be a space for "Trevians and friends" to talk about books which we have read. We also want to provide book lovers with resources for book reviews and perhaps ideas for our next "read."
