This was a perfect read for vacation. It's long, has a ton of characters and is somewhat difficult to get into. But once you are in, you are totally sucked in by the sights and smells of Bombay, the scene in post-colonial India, and the mess that is still Pakistan. The cast of memorable characters and epic storytelling like this can only be done by the best of writers. Rushdie is in a league of his own --the ability to pull off magical realism is a gift... so savor it on your next vacation.
