5 to 1 by Holly Bodger

It is not often that I read a book in one sitting, but I did just that with 5 to 1 by Holly Bodger.  Set in a dystopian future, this story takes place over three days of tests where young men vie to be chosen by privileged women.  In this society, it is the male children who are unwanted and expendable, daughters are valued and pampered. Sudasa, accompanied by her parents, her sister and her grandmother, has the challenge of narrowing the field.  She must choose from several, including an obviously well-off boy, one who is crippled, one who is rather young and a farmer’s son named Kiran, but called 5 for the contest.

5 to 1 is told from alternating points of view: Sudasa's in verse and 5’s (Kiran's) in prose. This potentially leads to an exploration of misunderstandings and stereotypes while certainly adding to the tension and suspense of the fast moving story. This title could work as an assigned read for literature circles. The poetry is cleverly presented; plus, color and symbolism are used throughout. In addition, there is much exploration of themes like obedience/rebellion and self-restraint.  

5 to 1 will appeal to strong readers in late middle school and reluctant readers throughout high school. It is a strong debut.  We need a sequel.
