Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando (realistic fiction)

Roomies by Sara Zarr

Definitely a book for girls, and what a book for girls to read during their senior year of high school or during the summer prior to going to college. The chapters switch between Elizabeth (EB) on the east coast and Lauren on the west coast, who are slated to be roommates at UC-Berkley. Through e-mail, they share their interests, likes/dislikes, what to bring to college, and the issues they face with friends, family, leaving home, and budding romantic relationships.

They also encounter the challenges of e-mail communication and the difficulties getting to know someone without face-to-face interaction.

What does seem unrealistic is they don't talk on the phone until something goes wrong, and they each share quite the personal information when they are complete strangers. One challenge they encounter also seems quite unrealistic, and while it forces each girl to reflect on what she did and why, it could prevent a reader from relating to these characters. What could have been quite real, remains a bit within the imagination.
