The Long Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Long Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a mystery story featuring privileged high school students – think of it perhaps as an upper class Veronica Mars meets West Wing. Although this title could technically be read as a stand-alone, there are enough references to previous events that I would recommend reading Barnes’ The Fixer first, The Long Game next, and then keeping a lookout for others in this exciting series.  Don’t take just my word for it, though; check out the positive comments from students on GoodReads and elsewhere.

In The Long Game, main character Tess promises to help win a student council election for classmate, Emilia.  Tess and her friends, Asher, Vivvie and Henry, are forced to deal with compromising pictures, a murder, and kidnapping by a fanatical group. Meanwhile, adults are coping with an attempted assassination event and resulting national security concerns. There is plenty of teenage angst and some gratuitous violence in this fast-paced story for students who like political intrigue and thrillers.

Barnes is also the author of The Naturals (start to another series) which was chosen by a student reading panel as a nominee for this year’s Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award list in Illinois.

Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman

Shadow Scale is book two in the Seraphina series by Rachel Hartman, although it can be read as a stand-alone tale. Are you ready for a hero’s journey? Then settle in with this lengthy (608 pages!) new addition featuring half-dragon Seraphina and friends.  The book comes complete with a map, cast of characters and glossary.  Called magical and enchanting, this sequel received starred reviews from Booklist, Kirkus, and Publishers Weekly.  The basic story centers around Seraphina’s efforts to stop war and to find other half-dragons, like herself. At times, it does seem repetitive, but will definitely appeal to fans of young adult fantasy stories.

Hartman’s debut novel, Seraphina, won numerous awards, including being named a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year and being listed in the ALA-YALSA Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults Book.  Seraphina is also one of the nominees for the 2015 Abe Lincoln Award and voting is currently underway in Illinois. Voting closes at midnight on March 15th, with the 2015 winner expected to be announced on Friday, March 20th.  If you have been busy reading and already voted, here is a recently released link to the 2016 list– enjoy!

The Selection and other Abe Lincoln Book award nominees

I have not yet decided on my favorite Abe Lincoln Award book, but I was surprised at how much I liked The Selection by Kiera Cass. I originally picked it up because another librarian was rapidly reading book 2 of 3 and said that several students were quite excited about the series. Yes, it is basically “Hunger Games meets The Bachelor,” but readers definitely want to know what happens to Maxon, the prince; to America Singer, the young woman with the possibility of becoming a princess; and to Aspen, now a palace guard and America’s first love.   It’s a light, fun, quick read, and I don’t know anyone who has read book 1 (The Selection) and not immediately looked for book 2 (The Elite) - in fact, the public library has over 30 people on a waiting list!

There are plenty of other fun and great quality reads on the Abe Lincoln list – look for more info here:
