So now that school is out and classes
are over, it’s time for some very relaxing reading and these “cozy” mysteries will
definitely entertain.
Tall Tail by Rita Mae Brown (and feline Sneaky Pie Brown) is the
newest in the Mrs. Murphy series, featuring Harry and her faithful pets,
Tucker, Mrs. Murphy and Pewter. Like
another recent entry in the series, this mystery is told across two time
periods: modern day Crozet, Virginia and the post-Revolutionary War
slave-holding time period when a brutal local murder occurred. The families and
characters are intertwined and readers can speculate how actions from hundreds
of years ago might still impact today.
Personally, I enjoy escaping with the Harry and her friends so I would
prefer more mystery and adventure clearly centered on them, but I still find
this series to be diverting, light and fun.
Aunt Dimity & the
Buried Treasure by Nancy Atherton is
the 21st in this series which is set in England, with the village of Finch and
its inhabitants often playing major roles.
In this case, a new couple moves into Ivy Cottage and his hobby of metal
detecting soon draws the interest of the inquisitive villagers. Lori Shepherd discovers a valuable garnet
bracelet and learns part of its story from Aunt Dimity (series readers know
Dimity has passed on, but manages to communicate with Lori). Soon, Lori is off to London to explore the
environs that Dimity frequented around the time of WWII. Again, completely charming with a light
mystery and romance – perfect for a quick summer beach read. Enjoy!!
