Another Day
by David Levithan is being released Tuesday and is part of the same series as Levithan’s
Every Day. Each of these books tells the story of a gender-neutral being
called A who wakes up in a different body every day. This character briefly
inhabits the body and then moves on to another situation – until the body is
Justin’s, the boyfriend to Rhiannon, and A is attracted to her. Eventually A
shares the story and Rhiannon is faced with several choices. Every Day is told from A’s
perspective and Rhiannon is the troubled narrator of Another Day.
Every Day was an Abe Lincoln Award nominee a
couple of years ago and a New York Times bestseller – I have not read
it, but heard very good things so I was curious to read Another Day. In his
foreword to that novel, Levithan says, “Is this a stand alone? Yes. Can this be
read before Every Day? Certainly.” So I tried it, but I honestly think
this story would be more interesting from A’s perspective. I found Another
Day to be a fairly slow read and I was frustrated at the way that
Rhiannon kept making excuses for her rather immature and selfish boyfriend,
Justin. We will have both titles available at the library so let us know your
reactions. And if you are looking for more Abe books
– we have a display near Rooms D and E and a virtual list (thank you, Ms. Peterson!)
on the main library page with covers, descriptions and some book trailer links.
