When seventeen-year-old Peter Houghton decides to get revenge on peers who have bullied him since his first days of school, he chooses to take a gun to school and kills ten people. Set in Sterling, New Hampshire, Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult investigates the impact a high school shooting has on the surrounding community. Picoult realistically portrays the detrimental effects social hierarchies may pose on students in public schools. At the end of this novel, Peter’s mother asks, "Everyone would remember Peter for nineteen minutes of his life, but what about the other nine million?" Complete with dynamic character relationships, this is a must read for those working in America’s schools.
